Sheriff Kolender Endorses Carl DeMaio

Posted on 25 February 2008 by Doug Dillard

San Diego City Council candidate Carl DeMaio today received the endorsement of the county’s top law enforcement official: Sheriff Bill Kolender. The Sheriff’s endorsement reflects DeMaio’s strong positions on combating crime and improving emergency response capabilities—as well as DeMaio’s extensive experience in working on public safety issues nationwide.

“Carl DeMaio will help safeguard our neighborhoods by making public safety a top priority,” noted Kolender as he announced his endorsement of DeMaio.

DeMaio would bring impressive experience in working with law enforcement and emergency responders to the City Council. In 2000 DeMaio created the Law Enforcement Development Center (LEDC) at the Performance Institute to focus on improving recruitment and retention in police and fire departments, assist local governments with securing important homeland security grants, and enhancing coordination among law enforcement and first responder organizations.

DeMaio also serves on the Board of Directors for the SafeNOWProject—the nation’s leading advocacy organization promoting improved tracking and monitoring of sex offenders.

In accepting the Sheriff’s endorsement, DeMaio commented: “I am thrilled to be supported by Sheriff Kolender—our region’s most respected voice on public safety issues. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, and Fire Chiefs across the country on innovative solutions to public safety challenges. I look forward to working all of our local officials to put public safety as our top priority in the years to come.”

DeMaio has released his positions on enhancing public safety in District 5. For fire protection, his commitments include improving brush management to reduce the risk of wildfire to each neighborhood, expanding volunteer CERT efforts, enhancing coordination among city, county and military first responders, and procuring additional equipment. To combat crime, DeMaio has committed to expanding neighborhood watch, implementing innovative strategies for curbing gang activity, and deploying more sworn police officers on patrol and in pro-active law enforcement operations.

The 5th City Council District will be an open seat in the 2008 election due to term limits. The district includes the communities of Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Sabre Springs, Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa, San Pasqual Valley and Sorrento Mesa.
