Mira Mesa Dot Com is Under Construction

Posted on 01 February 2008 by Doug Dillard

MiraMesa.com is undergoing a major overhaul and you will see lots of changes in the upcoming weeks. We have decided to go with a blog theme vs. the way the site use to be. This (hopefully) will make the site much more personable and more enjoyable to read, as well as make it much easier to update the content.

We do need your help on a few things though…

1) Please sign-up for our Newsletter. The more subscribers we get, the better deals we can get for you from local merchants. Just fill out the form over on the upper right side of this page. We plan on giving out lots of great prizes (t-shirts, gift certificates, etc…) to randomly drawn subscribers, so sign-up right now!

2) Please leave a comment below letting us know what you would like to see on this site. This site is for the residents of Mira Mesa and anyone who works here or visits, so please give us your suggestions. You can also send us email via the contact form if you prefer.

3) Let us know what is going on in Mira Mesa. I am basically running this website by myself right now and there is no way I can keep up on all the things going on in Mira Mesa. So please send me any and all news or announcements and I will do my best to get it on the website.

More to come…

I have a suggestion. Is there anyway you can have a Lost and Found section for pets? My neighbor’s dog went missing a couple of weeks ago and she and her boys put signs up all over Mira Mesa. I was thinking there must be a better way to get the dog’s picture in front of more people.

  2. Doug Says:

Hi Lisa. Absolutely, I was thinking the same thing as well. That should be very easy to implement. The trick will be getting the word out to the public, but once it is, I think it would be a great asset for all the pet owners in Mira Mesa.

Hi Doug, it’s good to see the website is being updated. I like the new look. :) But whatever happened to the forums from the old site? I would have posted more but one day I came back and for some reason my account was deleted. Since there were only a few active posters anyway I didn’t really see it as a big deal, I just wanted to know what happened to the forums.

Anyway, I like the new layout of the site and the fact that it’s more blog-like. I’ll be looking forward to updates. :D

  4. Doug Dillard Says:

Glad you like the new layout! My goal is to keep the site much more up-to-date-than it use to be. The old site was built on a custom script that I had created years ago, and over time I had nothing but troubles with it. As for the Forum software that I was using… it was continually hacked into and was more of a pain than it was worth. I apologize for you being deleted, but I am sure it was caused by one of the issues I was having with the software. With this new blog software… I am hoping this comments section will work similar to a forum where users can speak their minds and give suggestions for the site and future posts.

Thanks again for the comments and I am really hoping to hear from more of you :)

I really thought that you had forgotten or gave up on things. I am glad to see the site is up and running. The more info the better. I think you have a great forum here to really help people learn about our area. We have raised three boys here and now some of their kids our being raised here. I think it would be great if we could really find a What’s Happening Section for events and classes such as sports that are offered in the area. That people could write in and find out more about by reading replys from other people who will respond. But you really need our help in sharing this site with others. I have waited a long time to get the email response that you said would be coming. I am not complaining. But for a great site lets all work together to get the word out. I will personally share with everyone I know and look forward to learning and sharing with you all. Thanks for not just giving up.

It would be great to see a section with all the happenings with all the schools from SDCU elementary, junior high and high schools and probably Good Shepard private schools.

Info on any Tennis Teams, Soccer, baseball (little kids), pictures of any women’s club, kiwanis activities, etc.

More of a community, small town atmosphere….the kind we had before opening up to Sorrento Valley.

    Hi Ida,

Thanks for your great comments! I do apologize for neglecting the site for so long, but the old software just drove me crazy with all the bugs it had. I am hoping that this new software can stand the test of time.

As for you suggestion… I most definitely will put a What’s Happening section. I have a zillion ideas for the site, and it will definitely evolve over the next few months and years into something I am hoping the community will come to love.

Also as you suggest… I need the whole community to get involved to make this site really successful. I am only one person and I can only get so much information on my own. I need everyones help to let me know what’s going on in the community so I can get it posted. The more information, the better.

This site is for you and all the members of the community and anyone that works or visits Mira Mesa, so please let me know what you would like to see on the site and I will see what I can do!

    Hi Lillian,

Thanks for your comments. I do have a Mira Mesa Schools section here: http://www.miramesa.com/mira-mesa-schools/. Are you wanting to see what is going on at the different schools on this site? I could do that if I can get the schools to keep me updated.

I also have some basic information on kids activities here: http://www.miramesa.com/mira-mesa-youth-organizations/ and various other clubs here: http://www.miramesa.com/mira-mesa-clubs/. I do plan on adding much more detailed information as people send it to me.

Again… please tell everyone you know about this site and encourage people to submit their news to me via the contact form. I am definitely trying to give this site a small town atmosphere! THANKS :)

No problem about all the emails sent…I thought it was kinda funny. Really like the website and am glad that you’re able to devote time to it. Thanks for your commitment to the community! I hope someday soon to have more time to devote to getting involved myself.

No suggestions in particular right now, but I’ll try to remember to share if I think of something.

    Thanks again!

I took a quick peek and liked what I saw. Very nice, streamlined summary (home) page. Everything is easy to find and read. What happened to the calendar?

  11. Didi Says:

I appreciate your notice about the e-mail error. Not a problem though really. The website is looking pretty good, although had no problems with it previously. Can’t wait to see the final result. Please keep me posted.

  12. adam moore Says:

i haven’t even notice about the e-mail, it was funny though. Not a problem really. The website is looking good. Good WORK!!!

  13. Doug Dillard Says:

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

Mianne… I plan on adding a new calendar soon.

For those of you reading this and wondering what people are talking about having an issue with emails… here’s the story:

A few days ago I setup this new system that would send subscribers to my newsletter an email automatically any day a new post is added to this site. When I set it up I thought it would only send an email on future posts, but unfortunately it went and sent an email for every post that was already on the site as well. Not only that, I had not modified the newsletter template I was going to use, so each email came with this long mission statement that was in a foreign language that was not suppose to be there.

Also, I had just left for work before the emails were sent out and I did not catch it until the next day. As soon as I saw it I quickly sent out an email apologizing for all the emails, but not before 35 people unsubscribed :( to the newsletter.

If you are reading this and are one of the people that unsubscribed, I apologize for those emails and it will not happen again. So if you would like to subscribe again, please do!

  14. LInda Says:

Please bring back the business directory. I’m totally lost without it.

  15. Doug Dillard Says:

Linda… I do plan on bringing back the Business Directory, but honestly, it probably will not be back for a month or two. I have to have someone write a custom script that will integrate with the software that I am using to run this site, and that takes some time.

Right now I am working on integrating a Community Calendar into the site, that should hopefully be working by the end of this weekend.

I appreciate the input and would love to hear more suggestions!

  16. Doug Dillard Says:

Just wanted to let you know that I got the community calendar up today.
    http://www.miramesa.com/calendar/

I also registered the domain http://www.MiraMesaCalendar.com that will take you straight there as well.

There is not a lot of information there yet, but I will do my best to keep it updated. I would appreciate all the help I can get from you guys to let me know what is coming up as well.

    Thanks!

Hi, I didn’t know this site existed. I like it. I live in Mira Mesa and would like to be apart of our community. I use Dream weaver to create my web site. Do you need help. I don’t know alot, but would like to help and learn a few more things about the web along the way.
