Mira Mesa Chamber of Commerce is off and running! There was a great turn out by local businesses and community leaders at the first Mira Mesa Chamber of Commerce meeting at Callahan’s last Thursday.

Representatives from County Supervisors Pam Slater-Price and Ron Roberts, Assemblyman George Plescia, and Senators Dennis Hollingsworth and Christine Kehoe were present, and showed their support of the Chamber. The main presentation was given by our own Volunteer of the Year, Mike Davis, on why you should join the Chamber. This was followed by an open forum and closing by Chairman Mark Smith.
The main focus of the Chamber is to unite the business community, develop an identity, create an infrastructure to allow members to network with each other, and help businesses grow within the community. The other plans of the chamber are to market Mira Mesa as a destination for not only those who live here, but the outside customers as well. Future plans are to agree on a logo, tag line, and a fully functioning website. A website is currently up and running at www.miramesachamber.com, with details of plans, meeting dates and information, and more added constantly.

The next meeting is scheduled for September 4, 2008 and the slated Guest Speakers are City Councilman-Elect Carl DeMaio and President Patricia Hsieh from Miramar Collage. They should provide insight on both the political and educational future for our fine community, and how as businesses we can improve our collective image and help our community directly.

Over half of those in attendance immediately joined the chamber, and applications to join are currently available on the website. As Mike stated in the meeting, “we have strength in numbers”, and I hope you pass this information on to your favorite businesses and urge them to get involved. Charter Membership is only $40 for the rest of the year, and with more members, the Chamber can accomplish more. All Board Members are non-paid volunteers. The Chamber Board looks forward to seeing you at the next meeting.

The time is quickly approaching for another Mira Mesa Community Event. The Street Fair is a great way for local businesses and our residents to meet, enjoy great food and entertainment, and do some business in a fun, casual environment. If you plan on participating in this event, don’t wait until the last minute to reserve your spot. Vendor applications should be turned in prior to August 18th to avoid a late fee, and all vendor applications must be received before August 27th in order to participate this year. Originated by the Town Council in 1999, the Mira Mesa Street Fair is a premier event held on the fourth Saturday in September, which is the 27th this year. The Fair is located on Camino Ruiz, and runs from New Salem to Mira Mesa Blvd. Displays include Arts & Crafts vendors, local businesses, civic groups, the Kid’s Zone and 2 community stages. It is fun for the whole family. The most outstanding point of this event is that it is completely organized and hosted by community volunteers. Anyone that would like to volunteer, and volunteers are greatly needed, there are meetings on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Mira Mesa Senior Center. The next meeting is July 24th at 6:30 p.m. for the Mira Mesa Street Fair Committee. Chairperson for the committee is Robin Stutsman. For more information on how you or your business can make this event a success, or to download your vendor application, please go to the Mira Mesa Town Council website, under Street Fair.

Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack 2008. The sun was shining, the wild and stylish hats were everywhere, and over 43,000 people showed up to celebrate the first day of the racing season in style at Old Del Mar. A fantastic day of racing, socializing, eating, drinking, and wagering was had by all. The seats were packed from the infield to the premium box seats, grandstands to the track-side beach chair filled, standing room only area ( where we spent most of the day), and the Coors Light VIP Tent.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

This was my first time at the Opening Day at the Races, and now I can see why they break attendance records each year. It was hard not getting whiplash trying to take in all the sights.
Beautiful Ladies everywhere. Handsome Gentlemen trying to keep up with the Ladies. And did I mention the hats? This is the one day where every female gets to dress to impress and they are treated like celebrities. Video cameras, photographers, news media, they were all there to catch you looking your best.

There was some stiff competition during the hat contest. Kids and adults alike participated, and my favorites were original and creative. Batman made a showing, as did a tribute hat for Breast Cancer Research, where guests were asked to write the names of family members affected by Breast Cancer on the strips behind the hat. Great cause and a beautiful hat.

Still, if you didn’t make it this year, make plans on going early next year.

San Diego has some of the most beautiful women on earth, and most of them were here for Opening Day. Enjoy our view of the Day at the Races. Del Mar is Cool as ever.

I want to apologize for not posting in a while. About two months ago I took on a full-time partner (Mark Smith) to help me with my Internet businesses. Since then, we have made MiraMesa.com our top priority.

We have been working hard on a current Mira Mesa Business Directory, as I have had many requests for one since I removed the last one which had several bugs in the software. We have actually been going door to door and up and down Mira Mesa Blvd. and Miramar Rd., and now are working on the streets in between. So far we have entered almost 1100 businesses into the directory, and we probably have at least another thousand to go. We decided as soon as we got the first thousand listed, we would make the directory live.

There is still a lot of tweaking to do with the directory, which includes adding the rest of the images for each listing, as well as making the search function work much better. Our goal is to make this Business Directory your first choice to use when you need to find a business in Mira Mesa. You can check it out here: www.MiraMesa.com/directory or you can just click on the Biz Directory link on the top of this page.

Please do us a favor and check it out and give us some feedback when you get a chance.

We need volunteers for 2 hours on Sunday mornings (whenever you can make it) to help beautify the streets of Mira Mesa.

This past Sunday we had about 25 volunteers show up and paint a section of the block wall on Mira Mesa Blvd. just east of Parkdale that has been neglected for decades. That was just the start of this ongoing project to beautify the streets of Mira Mesa and we definitely could use your help each week. The schedule is not set in stone, but at least for the next couple weeks we will need volunteers from 8am to 10am on Sunday mornings. The more volunteers we get, the faster we will get done. Grab your significant other and/or your older kids and get involved in your community. Here is a great article on why you should volunteer with other family members.

The Mira Mesa Town Council approved $1000 towards the paint for this project at their last meeting and Frazee Paint and Wallcovering on Miramar Road has graciously volunteered to supply us with more paint as the project rolls along.

Now if you really don’t have the time or the ability to paint, there are other things you could do to help out. One of the coolest things that happened this past Sunday was a man stopped by in his car (out of the blue) and dropped off a big box of donuts to the volunteers. He was practically in tears when he dropped them off as he thanked us for the work we were doing. Now that made everyone feel good!

Now there are close to 80,000 of us living in Mira Mesa these days. If just a small percentage of us can spare a couple hours now and then we can clean this community up in no time. Please… make your plans to volunteer and let’s make Mira Mesa a beautiful place to live in!

If you would like to see some more photos that were taken of last Sunday’s event, you can check them out on Ted Brengel’s website.

You can also send us email via the contact form if you prefer.

3) Let us know what is going on in Mira Mesa. I am basically running this website by myself right now and there is no way I can keep up on all the things going on in Mira Mesa.
Hands-free cell phone devices in moving vehicles will be required soon!

A lot of people have been asking me about the new law (SB 1613) that requires drivers to use a hands-free device when using a cell phone in their vehicle . Most people thought the law was starting on New Year’s Day… but it actually starts on July 1st, 2008.

Specifically, the law will:

Prohibit the use of cell phones by drivers unless the driver is using a hands-free device starting July 1, 2008.

Allow drivers of commercial vehicles to use push-to-talk phones until July 1, 2011.

Allow drivers to make emergency phone calls without using a hands-free device.

Allow drivers of emergency response vehicles to use cell phone without a hands-free device.

Mira Mesa Volunteers. Get involved with Mira Mesa HEROES!

What’s missing in your life? If it’s a sense of belonging, friendship, “giving back” to society or community camaraderie, we have the place for you – your community’s HEROES (“Hometown Efforts to Rescue Our Endangered Society”). Simply put it’s neighbors helping less fortunate neighbors. The group’s main goal is to target MM community persons and organizations, which need physical/fix-it-up support, through a collaborative team comprised of local organizations, businesses and individuals – all to improve our collective community environment and spirit…. through one person/location at a time… The main objectives are: (1) what’s doable with a small team in 4 hours on a Saturday, (2) set priorities: safety, health, convenience, and (3) while most efforts are geared towards cleaning up, we will consider minor: electrical, plumbing, & structural repairs (simple items) in the house & yard.

We are always improving the process, iterating from one event to the next, but we will have an event one Saturday of each month, from 0800 to 1130. Several folks/organizations, including Brian Maienschein, our councilman, already endorse “HEROES” and we are still soliciting and solidifying additional support and endorsement from our community leaders and businesses, yet it’s the people, YOU, that will make this work. That is, be of immediate benefit to someone in need every month, truly touch their lives and make a difference – neighbors helping neighbors and getting to know each other at the same time. If you want to be part of a group that gives the most precious gift of all, TIME, to help those in need in your community, send an e-mail to Mike Davis at (davismh@san.rr.com) and let him know the types of skills you can bring (and any organization you belong to that could also help). This is your chance to be part of an active group that “walks the walk” in community self-help… If you have been thinking about similar ways to help others, or made that your new year’s resolution, this is the opportunity to “DO” something and make it happen – take a chance and “just do it” as you will enjoy it too!

We welcome ALL volunteers, whatever skill/talent you can bring, as it’s the labor that makes a difference. We also need support from folks and businesses willing to help defray the costs somewhat. Though not expected to cost much each month, we do need access to at least a discount on materials and a way to haul away the garbage… sometimes the hardest part! The group’s intent is to leverage and integrate similar efforts in our community (like the “alpha” project, senior citizen support, etc) – as there are many deserving and needy folks that we all need to help, so if your organization wants to do similar things and would like to tag-team this effort with us – please engage. Bottom line – we will have an event each month to help someone in need that we live next to. We can only succeed, doing a good deed and typically much more that that, as the recipient will be a whole lot better off and happier. What more could we ask for a few hours each month?

Don’t keep thinking about helping and giving back – DO IT NOW – and where better than in your community backyard. Together we can better our community – one person at a time - and have fun at the same time. Please feel free to recommend a needy candidate as well. Thanks in advance for your support – we all hope to see you there!
