Talent and Dance Showcase at the UCSD Mandeville, Feb. 21
February 3, 2009 by Mark Smith
Filed under Local Events, Upcoming Events
The UCSD Mandeville will feature a talent and dance showcase on February 21, 2009, with proceeds to benefit homeless teens in our area.
Don’t miss the explosion of creative energy as San Diego’s leading artists get together to perform in one location!
CStar Productionz’ annual talent show “ALL 4 U”, offers a rich blend of traditional, cultural dances from ancient times, to modern day jazz and hip hop of the present. Singers and vocalist groups will add soul to the evening as they sing some of our favorite tunes. It is entertainment for all ages, as the performers range from 4 to 60 years old. THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THIS SHOW!
Christopher Estrella is the director and founder of C-Star Productionz. Though he has been dancing, choreographing, and teaching hip hop for over ten years, he has a deep appreciation for all styles of dance. His vision is twofold: 1. To give performers the opportunity to live out their passions, and 2. To give homeless teenagers the chance to live a better life. After discussing his dream, Christopher also added: “I love watching the smile on the faces of the audience – it is one of the more fulfilling parts of my job.”
Jeffery Sitcov, founder of Photocharity, is trying to raise $1 million in 2009 for his latest project: “The House of Hope” – a home for homeless young adults ages 18-24. Currently, there is no facility for this age group in San Diego and there is an estimated 5000 of these young people sleeping on the streets every night. The All 4 U showcase will donate a portion of its proceeds to help build this home where they will receive shelter and learn job and life skills that were never acquired.
Uniting Photocharity and C-star Productionz together will help each achieve their goals, and your attendance can make this happen. So come and support a good cause and join the fun!!!! Tickets can be purchased through the UCSD Mandeville box office, or call 858-534-TIXS. DOORS OPEN AT 6:15 p.m., the show starts at 7:00.

3-Day Breast Cancer Walk Hits San Diego Nov. 21-23, 2008
November 14, 2008 by Mark Smith
The Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen For The Cure is coming to San Diego November 21 – 23. This is a 3 day walk that covers 60 miles, and the money raised goes to support those affected by breast cancer, and towards breast cancer research. It is a remarkable event, one that I hope you will support either with a donation or participation. 85% of the net proceeds stay in San Diego, with 15% being contributed to breast cancer research. Last year, out of the 12 cities nationwide that participated in the 3-Day events they raised over 86 million dollars through donations, contributions, and sponsorships.
There are many ways to support the walkers: You can organize a group to host a cheering station during the walk, or get a group of “Camp Angels” to assist participants with setting up & striking tents and unloading gear. You can help raise money, or just line the streets during the walk and show your support for those brave walkers as they hit the streets on their 20 mile per day journey. Make signs of encouragement, and get the kids involved. It is unbelievable how much you get back by helping the volunteers accomplish their goal of finishing the 3-Day Walk.
The staggering numbers show that the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life is about 1 in 8. It can hit any one of your friends or family, as it did to my family. My wife is a breast cancer survivor.
She detected a small lump while doing a self examination, and quickly went to see her doctor for a more in depth checkup. Then came the mammogram, a trip to see a surgeon, biopsy, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and more surgeries. There are several things that were critical to my wife surviving: early detection, aggressive treatment by her oncologist, surgeon, & radiologist, and the love and support from her friends and family. It has been almost 6 years since her first diagnosis, and now she is an inspiration to many others either beginning their battle with this cruel disease, or as support for family members looking for guidance through this emotional roller coaster.
That is how I first found out about the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and why I am presenting this information to you. Being part of the 3-Day in any manner is heartwarming, from the stories shared while on the walk, to the crowd support as the walkers pass by. We plan on showing our support this year by setting up an area with banners and playing music for the walkers. Each day, there are a few pre-determined areas for the cheering stations, as listed below. Please join us in showing support for these amazing men and women, and you will see just how important this cause is.

Brian Maienschein Farewell / Chamber Meeting
November 10, 2008 by Mark Smith

Mira Mesa says goodbye to Councilmember Brian Maienschein at a farewell get together at Callahan’s Pub & Brewery, Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to join local Town Council, Chamber of Commerce, Business Members and Residents of District 5 in wishing well our Representative of the San Diego City Council. Brian has been on the City Council since being elected in November 2000. Due to term restrictions, he will pass on his seat to Carl DeMaio.
Coincidentally, the Chamber of Commerce meeting has been moved to Callahan’s to enable the Chamber Members the opportunity to wish Brian well. The meeting will start at 6:15 and run to 7:30. The topic of this meeting will be fire safety, and our second presentation will be from our Treasurer, Brian Wissinger of the Wissinger Financial Group, on the state of our economy.
Please Help Remove Useless Restrictions
November 10, 2008 by Doug Dillard

The Mira Mesa Community Planning Group will be voting on a petition to remove the “Turning Restrictions” at certain times on Black Mountain Road where it intersects with Capricorn Way and Gemini Avenue. These restrictions are ineffective in deterring traffic as vehicles still drive through these side streets.
Instead of turning left on Black Mountain Road (which is illegal under these restrictions), drivers simply go straight through the intersection and then make a quick u-turn and then turn on Black Mountain Road, which actually causes more traffic congestion.
The original reason for these restrictions was to keep commuters from cutting through Mira Mesa to get to Rancho Penasquitos and other northern communities during rush hours, but it really never worked too well, as drivers found ways around the rules.
There was talk that when the 56 opened up they were going to remove the restrictions, but that has not happened yet, so local residents took it upon themselves to do something about it and got a petition going.
Now they got enough signatures to get the Planning Group to take a look at the proposal, but they really need people there to help get these “Restrictions” removed. So please help by showing up at the next Planning Group meeting and let them know how you feel. EVERY BODY counts, so please don’t assume that there will be enough other people there that you don’t need to show up. The more people that show up, the better chance there is to get these restrictions removed.
Please “Mark Your Calendar”

7th Annual Cookies for Fireman Party – Dec. 6th
October 4, 2008 by Doug Dillard
Darla Razzani will be hosting the “7th Annual Cookies for Fireman Party” at Callahan’s on Saturday, December 6th starting at 11:00 AM.
It’s that time of year!!! Time to recognize those Firefighters and all they do for us throughout the year.
For those of you who have never been to our cookie party in the past, it’s a blast.
What do we do? We make up cookie/goodie platters for the Fireman of our community and then deliver them to the stations.
What can you bring? Yourself, a dozen or two of goodies for the platters (i.e. brownies, cupcakes, fudge, bread, or whatever your “specialty” is for the holidays”) Or you can just show up and help.
What will be doing all day? We will be decorating cookies for the platters, making candy molds and making crafts for the trees at the stations, putting together the platters. You can come for as long as you want to help out. We do need people to “deliver” when we are done at 2:00.
Why are we doing this? Because we want to thank our community Firefighters for risking their lives each and every day to save ours.
When did this all start? Christmas after 9/11. After so many Firefighters and Police Officers lost their lives in the NYC attack.
So come join us and have a great time. In the past we’ve even made the news.
Supply list of items we use that you can bring if you want to or have them. It is not necessary to bring anything though, just your help in getting the cookies made/decorated and delivered is great:
Pre-baked shaped cookies
Crafts to make as decorations
Sprinkles
Food coloring
Whatever else you can think of and want to bring
P.S. IF YOU ARE A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT YOU CAN EARN COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS FOR THIS PROJECT.
We also want to send a special thanks to Larry’s (Callahan’s General manager) for his generosity. He has allowed us to have the cookie party at Callahan’s in case it’s a “rainy day” so we don’t have to reschedule.
What we will do is have it going on in the front room and patio (weather permitting). You can order food/drinks if you want and have a separate tab going. We will have water and Ice Tea available. We hope to see you all there!
You Are Invited to a Public “Town Hall” Dialogue on Reforming the San Diego City Council

Councilmember Donna Frye and Councilmember-Elect Carl DeMaio
Invite You to a Public “Town Hall” Dialogue on Reforming the San Diego City Council
Wednesday, September 10, 6:00-8:00pm
Scripps Ranch Library, 10301 Scripps Lake Drive
How can the Council enhance transparency and restore public trust?
What is the proper role of the Council in a Strong Mayor form of government?
These and other key questions are the focus of a bipartisan initiative that is currently underway at City Hall to reform the rules and policies governing the San Diego City Council.
The public has been frustrated by the infighting, lack of transparency, and financial troubles in recent years at City Hall. Moreover, as the city transitions to the Strong Mayor-Strong Council form of government, the City Council has had some difficulty in assuming its new role as an independent legislative body. With a new City Council taking office in December, there is a chance for real change.
The goal of this initiative is to generate ideas that would improve the transparency and effectiveness of the City Council in a Strong Mayor-Strong Council form of government. Everything is on the table: from the way the Council conducts its business and manages legislation to how the Council holds its meetings and interacts with the public.
This is a key opportunity for the public to let their feelings be known on how they expect a new City Council should operate to recover the city’s financial health and restore public trust and confidence in their city leaders.
Several City Councilmembers and City Council candidates will be on hand to directly hear from the public. In addition, ideas and suggestions from the initiative will be presented to the new City Council when it convenes after the November election.
Let your voice be heard…and share your ideas!
