Mira Mesa Street Fair 2008

Posted on 29 September 2008 by Mark Smith

Mira Mesa Street Fair 2008 was a success! The 10th annual street fair had it all, from outstanding bands and entertainers to a wide variety of food and merchandise booths for all to enjoy. Many local banks and credit unions were there to answer questions about the current state of our economy and investment opportunities.

Carl DeMaio, Brian Maienschein, and Mayor Jerry Sanders were also present, as well as representatives from the Mira Mesa Town Council, Mira Mesa Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Women’s Club, and various local churches and organizations. There were rides for the kids, huge construction trucks from Vulcan Materials, and Marvin Miles from Property Gallery had his Classic Woodie on display.

The Street Fair, hosted by the Mira Mesa Town Council and their Street Fair Committee, did a fine job presenting this event. The success was due to the help from the countless volunteers and community leaders committed to bringing this day in the sun to our local community. Especially all the Mira Mesa High School Volunteers in those brite blue shirts that were present to lend a hand setting up the tents, handing out fliers, and directing traffic. A good time was had by all. Here’s to next year being even bigger and better!

Top 10 Good Manners To Teach Your Children

Posted on 29 September 2008 by Mark Smith

We had a booth at the Mira Mesa Street Fair on Saturday, and if you came by you noticed the prize wheel we had out which attracted quite a bit of attention. Prizes were donated by our local
HEROES organization, Mesa Builders, the Mira Mesa Chamber of Commerce, Callahan’s Pub & Brewery, and Mira Mesa.Com. We met a lot of our neighbors, and handed out toys, small tools, gift cards, candy and ice cold water bottles to anyone who took a spin at the wheel. I must say for the large part, people were very nice, friendly, and thankful (especially for the cold water on such a hot day) but there were a few that just lacked good manners. Rather than focus on the negative side to this behavior, I would like to make this week’s Top 10 list good manners we should all teach our children, and hopefully use ourselves every day.

1. Say “THANK YOU” after someone offers you something, or “NO THANK YOU” if you decline the offer.

2. Always be polite, and use the word “PLEASE” which goes a long way, and doesn’t cost you anything.

3. Be considerate of others while on your phone, since no one wants to hear your conversation other than the person on the other end of the phone. Excuse yourself if you feel the need to continue a phone conversation while conversing with others.

4. Show interest in the topic and person you are talking to, give eye contact, and never interrupt. Think about it. You don’t like talking to someone who doesn’t listen or always interrupts you, do you?

5. Take turns. It is important to teach your kids that they will make more friends if they are good playmates, and this involves sharing and taking turns.

6. Be a good sport. Although most kids like to win, no one likes a poor loser or a gloating winner. Be a good sport no matter where you finish in the game. This lesson goes farther as you become an adult.

7. Be kind to others. Teaching your child to care for others, people and animals, will make them a better person and also builds character. Start when they are young, and build the foundation for what they will become.

8. Be on time. This teaches accountability and responsibility. It shows disrespect when you are constantly late, as this subconsciously tells the host that their time is not as important as your time is. Don’t arrive too early either, as they may not be ready for you until the scheduled time. And don’t stay too late, as this makes for an uncomfortable situation when guests overstay their welcome.

9. Remember the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It’s never a good thing to put people down or make fun of them as many people have feelings that could be hurt easily.

10. Whenever eating out or eating at home, it’s always good to practice good table manners, such as not talking with your mouth full or belching at the table. When at a dinner or party, do not eat until the host/hostess is seated.

There are hundreds of things that could be included here, but this is a good list to start with. One of my favorite expressions is “When the child curses, slap the parent.”  This is so true. We often wonder where our kids hear curse words, when in fact the hear them directly from their parents.
Watch what you say in front of your kids, and try to lead by example by following these good manners and you will raise a child to be proud of. Thank you for reading this article, and please feel free to leave your comments as well. And to all those that took prizes on Saturday without saying Thank You… You Are Welcome!

Top 10 Political Quotes

Posted on 25 September 2008 by Mark Smith

Is it just me or are you all sick of the political mudslinging going on at Presidential Campaign Headquarters on both sides of the fence? It is hard to believe anything that either one is saying about the other. Didn’t they both begin their campaigns by saying they were going to take the high road and not run smear campaigns? The bigger question here is, how am I going to segue into a new top 10 list? For starters, I am not going to choose sides. I would rather shift the light onto laughter and a comedic view of politics as a whole. Here are my Top 10 favorite political quotes:

1. “I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket
and trying to lift himself up by the handle.” - Winston Churchill

2. “Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.” - James Bovard

3. “A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.”
- George Bernard Shaw

4. “Foreign aid might be defined as a transfer of money from poor people in rich countries to rich people in poor countries. - Douglas Casey

5. “Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.”
- P.J. O’Rourke

6. “Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.” - Frederic Bastiat

7. “Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.” - Ronald Reagan

8. “I don’t make jokes… I just watch the government and report the facts.” - Will Rogers

9. “If you think health care is expensive now, wait until you see what it costs when it’s free!”
- P.J. O’Rourke

10. “Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you!” - Pericles (430 B.C.)

There should be a seperate column just for Dan Quayle quotes. Here are some of my favorites listed as honerable mention.

“If we don’t succeed, we run the risk of failure.”

“We are ready for an unforseen event that may or may not occur.”

“It isn’t pollution that’s harming the environment. It’s the impurities in our air and water that are doing it.”

“I love California. I practically grew up in Phoenix.”

“The loss of life will be irreplaceable.”

“I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have is that I didn’t study my Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people.”

“What a waste it is to lose one’s mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is.”

“I stand by all the misstatements that I’ve made.”

Ánd just remember, he was our 44th Vice President. Who would have thunk it?

West Nile Virus Update

Posted on 12 September 2008 by Mark Smith

WEST NILE VIRUS UPDATE

Human Cases Rise to 12; Bird Cases Rise to 390
The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) and Department of Environmental Health Vector Control report one confirmed locally-acquired human case of West Nile virus (WNV) and 19 dead birds, eight positive batches of mosquitoes and two sentinel chickens. The reporting period is from Sept. 1 to Sept. 7, 2008.

A 20-year-old Mira Mesa man has been diagnosed with meningitis; he was hospitalized, has been discharged and is improving. The sentinel chickens, mosquitoes and dead birds including 17 American crows, one Western Scrub Jay and one Stellar Jay were found in Camp Pendleton, Chollas View, Encinitas,El Cajon, Julian, Kearny Mesa, Mountain View, Oceanside, Poway, Ramona, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, Spring Valley, Sorrento Valley, Torrey Hills, Valencia Park and Vista.

2008 to-date case counts include:
12 locally acquired human cases
11 locally acquired cases
1 non-locally acquired case
1 non-locally acquired human case
380 dead birds
10 positive sentinel chickens
1 horse death
21 positive mosquito batches

Vector Control investigations have turned up positive mosquito batches in the vicinity of several of the WNV human victims, said Gary Erbeck, Director, San Diego County Department of Environmental Health. Mosquitoes breed in water, so it’s important to clean up mosquito breeding sources on your property and report green pools to Vector Control.

The public is urged to use insect repellent when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active; use insect repellent with DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535; do not sleep outside, unprotected, while camping; wear long sleeves and pants; and ensure screens on windows and doors fit tightly and have no holes or other damage. Most people infected with WNV do not develop any symptoms or become seriously ill. Nearly one in five who do fall ill may suffer from headache, fever, nausea, fatigue, skin rash or swollen glands. Approximately one in 150 people infected with WNV develop more serious neurological effects such as meningitis, encephalitis or myelitis. If you suspect you have WNV, contact your healthcare provider.

The County’s WNV Web site, www.SDFighttheBite.com, features a mosquito prevention checklist that includes the most common backyard breeding sources, from birdbaths to wheelbarrows. Residents should check their property weekly for mosquito breeding sources. For more information or to report dead birds or green pools, please call the County’s WNV information line toll free at (888) 551-INFO (4636).

You Are Invited to a Public “Town Hall” Dialogue on Reforming the San Diego City Council

Posted on 08 September 2008 by Doug Dillard

Councilmember Donna Frye and Councilmember-Elect Carl DeMaio

Invite You to a Public “Town Hall” Dialogue on Reforming the San Diego City Council

Wednesday, September 10, 6:00-8:00pm

Scripps Ranch Library, 10301 Scripps Lake Drive

How can the Council enhance transparency and restore public trust?

What is the proper role of the Council in a Strong Mayor form of government?

These and other key questions are the focus of a bipartisan initiative that is currently underway at City Hall to reform the rules and policies governing the San Diego City Council.

The public has been frustrated by the infighting, lack of transparency, and financial troubles in recent years at City Hall. Moreover, as the city transitions to the Strong Mayor-Strong Council form of government, the City Council has had some difficulty in assuming its new role as an independent legislative body. With a new City Council taking office in December, there is a chance for real change.

The goal of this initiative is to generate ideas that would improve the transparency and effectiveness of the City Council in a Strong Mayor-Strong Council form of government. Everything is on the table: from the way the Council conducts its business and manages legislation to how the Council holds its meetings and interacts with the public.

This is a key opportunity for the public to let their feelings be known on how they expect a new City Council should operate to recover the city’s financial health and restore public trust and confidence in their city leaders.

Several City Councilmembers and City Council candidates will be on hand to directly hear from the public. In addition, ideas and suggestions from the initiative will be presented to the new City Council when it convenes after the November election.

Let your voice be heard…and share your ideas!
