10 Greatest Songs of All Time

Posted on 27 June 2008 by Mark Smith

I like lists. I like to disagree with other’s lists. I think this creates great debate and discussion on any topic. I just enjoy a good verbal fight. I don’t necessarily need to win, I just like to participate.

Take a simple thing like “the 10 greatest songs of all time.” My list would look like this:

1. Hotel California – The Eagles
2. Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin
3. Blackbird – The Beatles
4. I Wish – Stevie Wonder
5. Layla – Eric Clapton
6. Because I Love You – Lenny Williams
7. Funeral for a Friend – Elton John
8. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant – Billy Joel
9. Into The Mystic – Van Morrison
10. 16 Tons – Tennessee Ernie Ford

I just finished typing my list, and already I disagree with several picks. Reading other’s lists enables me to learn a little about a complete stranger. Are they a rocker, or into punk or R&B? Do they have any ballads, which would show a sensitive side, or is it all about partying and stadium anthems? Does the list represent different genres, or is it completely one sided? Do I even know any of their songs at all? If I like some of them, I might just try out some of the others. Let me know what you think of my list, and please include a top 10 of your favorites. I will post a new top 10 with a specific category, so if you have any ideas, I would love to hear from you.

Great music selections. Brings back memories from my youth as a teenager.

    Hi Mark,
Great topic! “Layla” and “Hotel California” are definitely on my list.
My list is ever changing. It just depends on my mood and whether I want a dancing song, a driving song, a relaxing song, etc.
I would add “At Last” by Etta James, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, “Enter Sandman” by Metallica, “The Chair” by George Strait, “Little Moments” by Brad Paisley, “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison, “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd and finally “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” which has been recorded by many different people.
    I know, it’s a random collection, but what can I say, I am multi-faceted.

Jennifer, Thanks for being one of the first to respond to my rants. I can’t believe I forgot Brown Eyed Girl which is one of my favorites. Now I have to go to iTunes and download The Chair and Little Moments. I am not familiar with those two… Stay tuned for my next list:Songs that would be in the Jukebox From Hell. I just bought a jukebox that plays 45’s from Craigslist, and I love it. I could use some ideas to help fill it.

  4. Vonnie Says:

A list with no Springsteen is sacrilegious! No list is complete without Born to Run or Jungleland!

  5. Rob Says:

Agree with Vonnie…the Boss is missing. My list (all over the map):

    1. Layla - Derek & the Dominoes
    2. Backstreets - Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
    3. Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - The Police
    4. Something - The Beatles
    5. Bad - U2
    6. Paranoid Android - Radiohead
    7. Los Angeles - X
    8. Velouria - Pixies
    9. Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
    10. New Jack Hustler - Ice T

hon mention: Take Me Out to the Ballgame by ?!

Great list Jennifer O’Connell!!! Any list with no Nirvana is not a friend of mine! If there were space, and if anybody cared :), I would love to put a Nirvan top 10 list, but like Jennifer, it all depends on my mood :)
    great topic though :)
